Seasonal Spring Pond and Water Garden Care

Spring Care | Autumn and Winter Care

Spring Pond Care Checklist

  • Begin to feed your fish when water temperature stays above 50 degrees.
  • Bring plants back to their proper water level if they have been moved to the bottom of the pond.  It would be a good idea to move plants such as hardy water lilies closer to the service for a time as well to encourage growth.  If plants have been stored indoors, bring them out and place them in the pond.
  • Turn your pump and filter back on after cleaning them out.
  • Remove any plant matter that has accumulated in the pond, especially at the bottom.
  • Add Anacharis which will provide oxygen for your fish and help control algae.  I've found that you really only need one bunch for every 10 square feet as they grow and spread quickly.  You don't need a bunch for every square foot like the retailers will tell you.
  • You can then add floaters such as water hyacinth and water lettuce as soon as they become available in your area.  Make sure that any danger of frost is gone.
  • This would also be a good time to empty your pond for a good cleaning or divide and repot plants if necessary.
