How to Care for your Pond Plants
The first thing to keep in mind about aquatic pond plants is that they need special soil. Regular topsoil will not work and either special pond plant soil must be purchased or I've heard some clays will work. Most pond plants will also need five or six hours of direct sunlight to be healthy. Yet you must limit the amount of sunlight that reaches the water because an excess will cause algae to grow and water temperature to rise. The obvious solution is a lot of aquatic plants in your pond.
Your selection of aquatic greenery should include floating plants to provide oxygen and shade. Then add whatever marginal plants catch your eye. Marginal plants are placed in pots but are not completely submerged. Finally, a pond would not be complete without a hardy or tropical water lily in your favorite color. The lily pads will provide a great deal of shade for your pond water and fish.
Remember to always keep the top of water lilies above the soil. Place them near the water surface if they are small or in the spring. Lower them as they get larger or as the water temperature rises. Tropical water lilies will not survive the winter while hardy water lilies can be cut back and lowered to the bottom of the pond during the winter months.
