How to Keep Your Pond or Water Garden Healthy

Pond Maintenance Checklist

Now it's time to sit back, relax and enjoy your pond.  If you're a typical pond lover, enjoying your pond will include maintaining it.  Some of the most fun you can have with a pond is trimming the plants, feeding the fish or just moving things around.  The following list spells out some points to remember while working on your aquatic garden.

  1. Always keep two thirds of the water surface covered with plants if your pond receives a lot of direct sunlight.
  2. Remove as much organic debris from the water's surface as possible and clean debris from the bottom of the pond when there is a buildup.
  3. Remove floating string algae but leave the furry algae that clings to the side of the pond liner.  This algae provides food and oxygen for your fish and gives a natural appearance to your pond.
  4. Don't overstock your pond with more fish than it can handle and don't overfeed your fish.
  5. That's it!  Have fun!
