Pond Leaf Removal
One of the first things to affect your pond or water garden in the Autumn or Fall is falling leaves. There are several options to control this problem but the end result should be to keep them out of the water or remove them as soon as possible. Leaves or plant debris that sink to the bottom of the water will decay and disrupt the balance of your pond ecosystem. One way to easily stay leaf-free is to place a net over your pond. As easy as this method is, it does take away any enjoyment you may receive from viewing at this time of year.
A second method is to simply skim the leaves off by hand or with a net as much as possible. The downside to skimming is that it must be done frequently. Another good idea for this time of year is to try to remove any plant matter that has already sunk to the bottom. Use a net, siphon or a vacuum.
